The county has a name for a lot of Topanga, and it is antiquated subdivisions. The Santa Monica Mountains North Area Plan says many of these lots were recorded before 1929, the year the Subdivision Map Act was amended to give local governments more control over development, and it names Topanga Canyon as one of the areas that still carry them. That plan covers the canyon north of the coastal zone. South of that line the county uses a different term, Rural Villages, and seven of the seventeen it lists are Topanga: Topanga Oaks, Topanga Woods, Old Topanga, Upper Old Topanga, Fernwood, Glenview and the Old Post Office Tract.
