Roofing in Altadena splits into two jobs that have almost nothing in common. The Eaton fire destroyed thousands of homes here in January 2025, and the rebuilds are moving through permitting now. Roofing follows framing, so much of that work lands across 2026 to 2028. The other job is the houses that survived and have not been looked at properly since.

- Watch forEmber damage under the tile and in the attic that does not show from the street
The houses that are still standing
Altadena filled in from the 1900s through the 1960s, and each era ages out its own way. The Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Colonial Revival houses on the older south and central streets, the postwar ranch stock of the 1950s, and the mid-century houses on the upper slopes toward the Angeles National Forest were mostly re-roofed once, a lot of it in the 1990s. A thirty-year composition shingle laid in 1994 is finished, fire or no fire. On the Spanish stock the tile can be perfectly sound while the felt underneath it has gone.
On top of that sits fire damage that does not show from the street: embrittled underlayment beneath tile, melted plastic vents and turbines, charred rafter tails, ember scarring around penetrations. Embers travel through attic vents, so the attic gets checked too. If nobody has been up there since January 2025, get up there before a wet winter finds it for you.

What it costs here
These are estimate ranges, not quotes. Nobody can price a roof without seeing it or reading the plans.
- Composition shingle replacement:roughly $9,000 to $25,000.
- Tile lift and relay (sound tiles off, new underlayment, same tiles back): roughly $12,000 to $30,000.
- New tile throughout:roughly $25,000 to $60,000 and up.
- Flat or low-slope (TPO, modified bitumen, cap sheet):roughly $12,000 to $30,000.
- Solar removal and reinstall:roughly $4,000 to $10,000, on top of the roof.
On a standing Altadena house the tile question moves the number most. A lift and relay saves the tile and buys another underlayment life; new tile throughout is a different order of cost. A rebuild roof is priced inside the overall build, where the cost sits in the assembly and not in the surface material. We line-item that, because two roofs that both say Class A can be very different underneath.
Common questions about roofing in Altadena
My house survived the Eaton fire. Does the roof still need looking at?
Yes. Ember and radiant heat damage often sits out of sight: embrittled underlayment beneath tile, melted vents, charred rafter tails, scarring at penetrations. An Altadena roof can look untouched from the driveway while the layer that keeps water out has been cooked. Have the roof and the attic checked before the rain, because that kind of damage usually announces itself as a leak.
